Matching system Painted T-bar grid system
Color consistency first · for 600×600 standard tiles
A color-coated gypsum ceiling tile is a decorative ceiling panel whose gypsum core carries a color coating, a laminated film or a spray finish. It belongs to the same faced-gypsum family as the PVC-faced tile, and its grid system and installation process are identical. The differences come down to three things: color consistency, coating protection and touch-up painting. Only those three are covered here; grid installation is described in 05 Painted T-Bar Grid.
How to read this document· Drawing conventions and dimension rules are the same as in 01 PVC Gypsum Ceiling Tile;
· The sequence is fixed: finish the wall paint first, then install the tiles; otherwise paint contamination cannot be removed;
· Touch-up shades are supplied by the factory — never mix color on site.
The core is paper-faced gypsum board or decorative gypsum board. Surface finishing falls into three types: roller coating (lowest cost, slight roller marks), spray coating (even matte, good hiding) and film lamination (best scrub resistance, wood or stone patterns). Some products are further printed, embossed or laser-engraved.
Color coating: acrylic or waterborne fluorocarbon, 20–40 μm thick; it governs scrub resistance and resistance to yellowing;
Gypsum core: 7–9 mm thick, moisture content ≤2.5 %;
Back layer: facing paper or a moisture-resistant coating; foil backing is used in higher-humidity areas.

Areas with sustained humidity > 80 %
Hospital corridors needing frequent scrubbing (use PVC-faced tile or aluminum panel)
Outdoors or semi-outdoors
Key difference from PVC-faced tile - The color coating does not seal the board: moisture can still enter through the edges and the back, and scrub resistance is far below that of a PVC film. Color-coated tiles therefore suit dry, low-contamination spaces; in wet areas the first choice remains PVC-faced tile or aluminum panel.
One batch, one shade: use a single batch number for one continuous visible area; different batches can differ visibly in depth even with the same shade code;
Number on arrival: number the tiles in packing order and lay them in that order, so that skipping numbers cannot create color patches;
Compare under raking light: line up 5–6 tiles at 45° to the light; set aside any tile with an excessive shade difference for edges or cut pieces;
Keep spares: reserve 3 %–5 % of the same batch for later replacement (a later order will almost never match the batch).
MEP, fire protection and HVAC above the ceiling are complete and accepted, so that tiles need not be removed again;
Wet trades on walls and floors are complete and dry, and wall paint is finished (the main scheduling difference from PVC-faced tile);
Ambient temperature ≥5 ℃, relative humidity ≤80 %, openings closed;
Bring tiles on site 24 h in advance and store them flat to acclimatize;
Clear space above the ceiling ≥250 mm.
Identical to Table 2-2 in 01 PVC Gypsum Ceiling Tile: main runner T24×38, cross tee T24×26, L wall angle, φ6 hanger rod, hanger clip, splice clip and M8 expansion bolt. Quantity per 100 m²: main runner 85–90 m, cross tee 170–180 m, 70–75 sets each of hanger rod and hanger clip.
Set out the lines
Snap the finished ceiling level line and the main runner lines on all four walls, closing the loop, deviation ≤3 mm.
Fix the wall angle
Keep the lower edge of the L angle flush with the level line, fixings at ≤300, miter the corners at 45°.
Install hanger rods and clips
M8 expansion bolt plus φ6 hanger rod, spacing ≤1200×1200, ≤300 from the end of the main runner, rods plumb.
Install main runners
Apply camber of 1/200–1/300 of the short span; stagger the joints so that adjacent runners never splice at the same point.
Install cross tees
Square to the main runners at a spacing equal to the tile width; push the tabs fully home; rest the wall end on the angle.
Level
Run lines in both directions, adjust each hanger nut, flatness ≤3 mm/2 m, then retighten all fixings.
Lay the tiles (in numbered order)
Start at the middle of the room and work outward; lay in continuous arrival-number order; keep patterned tiles in the same direction; all four edges must sit on the flanges.
Cut and touch up
Cut at walls and columns with the cut edge to the wall; seal cut edges with matching paint in the shade supplied by the factory.
Clean and self-check
Dust with a soft cloth; never wipe large areas of fresh coating with a wet cloth.
Why not start from a corner - If the grid is calculated wrongly when starting from a corner, the error accumulates toward the far wall and ends in a 30 mm sliver that looks poor and cannot be fixed. Starting at the middle splits the error to both sides and keeps the border tiles under control.
A concealed grid requires tiles with a tongue-and-groove edge; square-edge color-coated tiles cannot produce a grid-free surface. Use the concealed-grid series of the grid system and proceed as follows:
Install the grid
Main runners and concealed runners follow the exposed-grid method; the underside of the concealed runners must be flush (height difference ≤1 mm).
Trial lay
Lay 2–3 rows dry and check joints, shade and pattern direction before fixing.
Fix tile by tile
Tilt the tile in, engage one tongue into the tile already fixed, rest the other side on the concealed runner and press home with the dedicated clip.
Last tile
Position it with a suction lifter and push it gently into the groove; never pry.
Joints
Leave a 2 mm shadow gap with no filler; where a seamless look is required, use a matching joint strip.
Where floor-to-ceiling height is limited or a stepped profile is required, fix with C50 furring channels (spacing 400/600) and self-drilling screws, or spot-bond to a dry, flat substrate of at least 20 m². The method matches Chapter 6 of 01, with only two differences:
Screw heads must never break the coating: countersink 0.5–1 mm, spot-fill with matching repair compound and touch up with paint once dry;
Spot adhesive must not squeeze onto the face: apply only enough that nothing oozes out when pressed; wipe any excess immediately, since it cannot be removed once cured.
Openings: at least 50 from the tile edge, with a protective ring around the opening; luminaires over 3 kg need independent hanger rods;
Access panels: made up from a full tile, frame on independent hangers, cover fitted with a safety chain;
Junction with walls: finish with an L wall angle, or leave a 5–8 mm shadow gap;
Corners and columns: V-groove the back and bend, radius ≥600, touch up the cuts;
Junctions with other materials: separate the two systems with a T divider; each system stays independent.
Table 7-1 Permissible deviations and control items
Item | Permissible deviation (mm) | Method of check |
|---|---|---|
Surface flatness | 3 | 2 m straightedge + feeler gauge |
Joint straightness | 3 | 5 m taut line |
Joint height difference | 1 | Steel rule + feeler gauge |
Level | ±5 | Level instrument or taut line |
Shade difference | Not visible to the eye within one space | Compare at 45° in daylight, viewed from 3 m |
Coating scratches | Not permitted | Visual check under raking light |
Visual check: faces clean and free of scratches and fingerprints; no visible shade difference within one space; pattern direction consistent; even joints; no burrs at openings; edge trim tight to the wall without waviness.
Table 8-1 Typical defects
Symptom | Main cause | Remedy and prevention |
|---|---|---|
Visible color patches in one space | Batches mixed; tiles laid out of number order | Zone by batch and lay in continuous number order; where already mixed, group the darker tiles on the shaded side |
Paint contamination on the face | Tiles installed before the walls were painted | Reschedule: finish and dry the wall paint before installing tiles |
White cut edges, blooming at the edge | Edge not sealed, or the touch-up shade does not match | Use factory matching paint and apply two coats to the cuts |
Coating scratches | No soft padding when handling; tools knocking the face | Wear gloves and interleave paper between tiles; use suction lifters, not hooks |
Yellowing of the face | UV light, cooking fumes, alkaline cleaners | Avoid direct sunlight; use neutral cleaners; yellowed tiles can only be replaced |
Shade mismatch after touch-up | Color mixed on site; no blending | Use the factory shade code and feather the edges; never recoat a whole tile |
Chipped corners | Point loading; prying | Two people carry the edges; use suction lifters on concealed grids |
Table 9-1 Warehouse conditions
Item | Requirement | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
Location | Indoors, dry, ventilated, rain-proof | Never store in the open |
Temperature | 5 – 35 ℃ | Keep away from heat sources |
Relative humidity | ≤70 % | Use a dehumidifier in the rainy season |
Light | Avoid direct sunlight | Color coatings are sensitive to UV; 2–3 months of direct sun causes clear fading |
Storage restrictions | Never stored with cement, lime, acids, alkalis or oils | Hygroscopic and corrosive materials contaminate the coating |
Pallet or 100×100 dunnage at least 100 off the floor and 100 from walls, with 600 aisles between stacks;
Store flat with the face up, edges aligned, no overhang; stack height ≤1.2 m, at most 10 layers of 8–9 mm tile;
Cover the stack with a vapor barrier overhanging at least 200 on all sides, without wrapping the whole stack (it must breathe to prevent condensation);
Take tiles layer by layer from the top, never from the middle; stack loose tiles separately;
Never store upright, leaning or overhanging on one side; never place heavy loads on the stack or stand on it.
Recommended stock ≤6 months, maximum ≤12 months. Color coatings yellow slowly; beyond that limit, sample the batch: take 3 tiles and compare them side by side with the retained sample, and do not use clearly mismatched tiles on the main visible surface. Dispatch on a first-in-first-out basis.
Level, dry truck bed with dunnage underneath, stacked flat, height ≤1.2 m, banded as one unit;
Rain-proof tarpaulin for the whole trip, with soft cloth between tarpaulin and tile face so that rubbing cannot strip the paint;
Never ship with cement, sand and gravel, steel or chemicals;
Pass tiles one by one when loading and unloading; never throw or drag them; forklifts must not push the stack directly;
Use a safety harness above 2 m; never stand on the grid or the tile face; wear goggles and a mask when cutting.
