Technical guide · Pandaboard
Light steel framing is split by section: U channels form the floor and ceiling tracks, C studs carry the wall, T sections form an exposed ceiling grid, and L angle closes the edge. Partitions normally use C50, C75 or C100 from 0.5–1.2 mm steel strip (confirm on order); studs sit at 400 mm or 600 mm with a bracing channel and support clips. Ceilings use CS50 or CS60 carriers on rods with furring channels at 400 mm. A C stud cannot replace a U track, and framing cannot replace a ceiling T grid.
Light steel framing is the framing system for flat-sheet materials such as gypsum board, calcium silicate board, fiber cement board and magnesium oxide board. A board has almost no flexural capacity of its own: the strength, flatness, sound insulation and fire performance of a partition all depend on the profile size, the spacing and the connection detail of the framing. This document is the general accessory manual for flat-sheet products.
Safety noticePartition collapse and ceiling drop usually start with the framing: stud spacing too wide, floor track under-fixed, openings not reinforced, hanger rods replaced with wire. The control values in this document are mandatory.

Keep one batch per wall so hole positions and steel thickness match
Keep dry in the rainy season; white storage stain on galvanizing is harmless but wipe dry before use
Figure 1 Partition framing Floor and ceiling track + studs + bracing channel; stud spacing depends on wall height and board thickness.
Table 2-1 Partition framing (single-layer board, standard)
Wall height | Stud | Spacing | Bracing channel | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
≤3.0 m | C50 | 400 | Not required | Board 9.5 |
3.0 – 4.0 m | C75 | 400/600 | ≥1 row | Board 12 |
4.0 – 5.5 m | C100 | 400 | ≥2 rows | Structural check required |
>5.5 m | C100 heavy-gauge or square tube | 400 | As designed | Engineer design required |
Setting out - Mark center lines and edge lines on the floor and ceiling; mark door and window openings at the same time.
Fix floor and ceiling track - Fix U-profiles with powder-actuated pins @≤600 or expansion bolts; place a 3 mm sealing strip between profile and concrete (acoustic).
Install studs - Insert C-profiles into the tracks, spacing per Table 2-1; keep the open side facing the same way; connect with blind rivets.
Install bracing channel - Where wall height >3 m, thread the bracing channel through, both ends into the tracks, joints staggered.
Opening reinforcement - Add one stud each side of the opening and a brace or reinforced stud above it; heavy doors (fire doors, glass doors) need square tube or double studs.
Corners and T-junctions - Add studs at corners to form a closed frame; use proprietary connectors for T-junctions.
Services - Where conduit crosses a stud, cut with a hole saw; hole ≤1/2 profile width; never cut the flange.
Acceptance - Check spacing, plumb and fixing; sign off before boarding.
Setting out - Mark the level line and the main runner lines, closing on all four walls.
Install hanger rods - M8 expansion bolt + φ6 (non-traffic) / φ8 (traffic) rod, spacing ≤1200×1200, ≤300 from the end.
Install main runners - U38/U50, connected with hanger clips, camber 1/200–1/300, joints staggered.
Install furring channels - C50, spacing 400 (9.5 board) / 600 (12 board), fixed with clips, soffit leveled to ≤2 mm/2 m.
Bracing and reinforcement - Add cross braces at board end joints and at luminaire cut-outs.
Acceptance - Check spacing, camber, clip locking and back-bracing; sign off before boarding.
Floor track fixing: pin spacing ≤600; in hollow brick use chemical anchors or a continuous timber batten;
Stud splicing: use proprietary inner splice connectors, stagger the joints, never butt them directly;
Opening reinforcement: full-height studs both sides, brace above extending ≥300 beyond each side;
Service holes: hole ≤1/2 profile width, ≥10 from the flange edge, no continuous runs of holes;
Expansion joints: 10–20 joint where a partition exceeds 12 m or meets a different structure;
Fire stopping: seal floor penetrations and shafts to fire requirements, leave no gap.
Table 5-1 Control values
Item | Control value | Test method |
|---|---|---|
Profile wall thickness | ≥0.6 (partition) / ≥0.8 (ceiling main runner) | Caliper sampling |
Stud spacing | ±10 | Tape, ≥3 points per wall face |
Profile plumb | ≤3 mm/m | 2 m plumb rule |
Profile flatness | ≤2 mm/2 m | String line + straightedge |
Floor track fixing spacing | ≤600 | Tape |
Hanger spacing | ≤1200 × 1200 | Tape |
Camber | 1/200~1/300 of short span | String line + steel rule |
Zinc coating | Uniform, no exposed steel | Visual |
Table 6-1 Wrong practice
Wrong practice | Consequence | Correct practice |
|---|---|---|
Stud spacing 800 or more | Board bulges, poor sound insulation, cracking | Keep 400/600 per Table 2-1 |
Thickness too low (marked 0.6, actual 0.45) | Low capacity, easy distortion | Caliper check on delivery |
Only a few pins in the floor track | Loose wall base, whole wall rocks | Fix @≤600 |
No studs at openings | Door frame distorts, corners crack | Full-height studs both sides + bracing |
Services cut through the flange | Local buckling | Hole ≤1/2 width, ≥10 from flange |
Hanger rods replaced with wire | Ceiling sags, risk of fall | φ6 threaded rod + hanger clip |
Cut ends not painted | Rust bleeds through the joints | Touch up cut ends with anti-rust paint |
Figure 2 Framing storage Store flat and bundled on dunnage, stack ≤1.5 m; upright or leaning storage bows long profiles permanently.
Table 7-1 Storage conditions
Item | Requirement | Note |
|---|---|---|
Site | Indoors, dry, ventilated, rain-proof | Damp causes white rust |
Stacking | Flat, dunnage ≥100 off the floor, support spacing ≤1.5 m | Too few supports cause sagging |
Stack height | ≤1.5 m | Overloading distorts the bottom layer |
Bundling | One band every 10–20 pieces | Prevents bundles opening and impact damage |
Incompatible goods | Not with acids, alkalis, salts or cement | Attacks the zinc coating |
Handling: long profiles are carried by several people; mid-span sag must not exceed 50 mm; never throw or drag. Recommended stock life ≤12 months; beyond that, sample-check zinc coating and straightness.
Load flat, dunnage supports ≤1.5 m, lash down;
Cover with a rain tarpaulin;
Do not stack heavy goods on the profiles;
Wear goggles when cutting; touch up cut ends promptly;
Wear a harness for work at height; never stand on the framing.
□Size and wall thickness match the order (caliper sample, ≥5 points per batch)
□Zinc coating uniform, no white rust, no exposed steel
□Section straight, bow ≤2 mm in 1 m
□Perforations and slots complete, no burrs
□Same batch number, mill test certificate supplied
C50 or C75 — which should I use?
C50 for single-layer walls up to 3 m; C75 above 3 m, double layer or where sound insulation matters; C100 for tall walls and plant rooms.
Should studs be at 400 or 600 mm?
600 mm works for 12 mm single layer up to 3 m. Use 400 mm for double layer, tiled finishes, walls over 3 m or impact resistance; wider spacing lets the board bow between screws.
Do I really need a bracing channel?
Yes above 3 m, or wherever the wall must resist lateral movement; the channel ties the studs into one plane. Short partitions can use clips, but every crossing still needs fixing.
Can partition studs be used for a ceiling?
No. A C stud has no T flange to carry boards. Ceilings need CS carriers with furring channels on rods taken back to the structure.
Can I cut holes in the framing for services?
Keep holes under 50% of web depth and never cut a flange. Above 50 mm, sleeve the hole or add a plate, and avoid a line of holes in one stud.
Why do screw heads show rust spots?
Heads left proud break the zinc, no primer was applied, or the space is humid. Use corrosion-resistant screws, sink heads 0.5–1 mm, then spot-prime.
