Direct answer
WPC wall panels are typically 300, 400 or 600 mm wide, 2440–3000 mm long and 8–10 mm thick, hollow-cored or solid, with a tongue-and-groove edge and clips on the long sides. Bond them to a leveled wall or fix to timber or composite furring at 300–400 mm centers. Work bottom-up, start 10–15 mm off the floor and leave 5–10 mm at the top and ends; never trap a panel floor to ceiling, because the plastic core moves about 2–3 mm per meter over a 40 K swing.
WPC panels (wood-plastic composite, bamboo-wood fiber wall panel) are extruded from wood or bamboo powder compounded with thermoplastic resin, with a decorative film on the face. They are fast to install, formaldehyde-free and washable. The main risk is thermal movement: without the correct gaps, one summer is enough to cause bulging and unclipping.
The linear expansion coefficient of WPC is about 3–5 times that of aluminum alloy. Every detail must leave a gap on all four sides, include intermediate joints along the length, and never be wedged tight from floor to ceiling.

Move panels indoors 24 h ahead and store flat; never lean them against a wall, which sets a permanent bow
Keep one batch and one shade per elevation or room
Spot-check 5 %: intact tongue or click, unmarked face, straightness within 2 mm over 1 m
Cut and drill in a separate area and clear swarf at once so the face is not scratched
Figure 1 Tongue-and-groove clip joint Push along the groove until it clicks; never hammer the groove directly.
Setting out - Mark the skirting level, panel joint positions and the top trim line.
Install the starter strip - Fix the starter strip at the wall base, 10–15 above the floor, and level it; this is the datum for the whole wall.
Position the first panel - Seat the lower edge in the starter strip and fix with clips to the wall (nail gun or self-drilling screw into the clip, not into the panel face).
Assemble panel by panel - Insert the tongue of the second panel into the groove of the first, push home and fix with clips; 3–5 clips per panel, evenly top and bottom.
Top trim - Fit a U-profile edge trim at the top, leave a 5–10 expansion gap between panel and ceiling, covered by the trim.
Openings - Fit edge trim around openings; seal cut panel edges.
Corners - External corner trim at outside corners, internal corner trim at inside corners; leave a 3–5 gap on each panel at internal corners.
Cleaning - Wipe with a soft cloth; no solvent-based cleaners.
Three gap rules① Top: 5–10 between panel and ceiling, covered by the edge trim; ② Bottom: 10–15 above the floor; ③ Along the length: where a continuous wall run exceeds 6 m, a 8–10 joint every 6 m (same-color edge trim). Miss any one of them and the panel bulges at mid-height after a hot summer.
Install framing - Timber framing (preservative-treated) or light steel framing, spacing ≤400, firmly fixed to the wall, framing face flatness ≤2 mm/2 m.
Run services - Fix conduit between the framing members; it must not protrude beyond the framing face.
Install the starter strip - As Method 1, 10–15 above the floor.
Fix panels - Fix clips to the framing with self-drilling screws (screws must land on framing) and assemble panel by panel.
Trims - Top, corners and openings as Method 1.
Why framing is recommendedFraming creates a 20–30 cavity between panel and wall: services can run, the plane can be leveled, wall movement is absorbed, and the panel back is ventilated so it stays dry. Direct clip fixing is only advisable where the wall itself is flat (≤3 mm/2 m).
Only for small areas (≤10 m² per face), on a flat, sound substrate with no vibration;
Use polymer-modified adhesive or structural adhesive, ribbon + dot bonding, ribbon width 30, dot spacing ≤300;
Leave 50 unglued at the perimeter for venting and removal;
Press home and support temporarily for 24 h;
Never fully bed the panel: a fully bedded back cannot vent and blisters when heated.
Table 6-1 Acceptance requirements
Item | Requirement | Test method |
|---|---|---|
Surface flatness | ≤2 mm/2 m | 2 m straightedge + feeler gauge |
Face plumb | ≤2 mm/2 m | Plumb rule |
Panel joints | Even and straight, deviation ≤1 | Visual + steel rule |
Step between panels | ≤0.5 | Hand feel |
Hollow spots | Not permitted | Tap with a small hammer |
Expansion gaps | Top, bottom and intermediate joints all present | Check every wall face |
Color difference, scratches | Not discernible on the same wall | Visual in daylight |
Table 7-1 Defects | ||
Symptom | Main cause | Treatment and prevention |
|---|---|---|
Bulging at mid-height | No expansion gap; wedged tight floor to ceiling | 5–10 at the top; intermediate joints on long walls |
Panel face bulges at clips | Clip over-driven; screw into the panel face | Screw into the clip only; control the force |
Joints crack | Panels not pushed home; thermal movement | Push to the click; leave gaps as specified |
Wide gap at internal corner | No internal corner trim, panels butted | Fit internal corner trim, 3–5 gap each panel |
Film peeling, delamination | Damp, adhesive failure, aggressive cleaner | Avoid permanent moisture; neutral cleaner |
Color difference | Mixed batch numbers | One batch per wall face |
Chipped external corner | No corner trim, 45° butt joint | Use same-color external corner trim |
Figure 2 Stacking Store flat, raised and out of direct sun; WPC softens when hot, and upright or leaning storage causes permanent distortion.
Table 8-1 Storage conditions
Item | Requirement | Note |
|---|---|---|
Site | Indoors, dry, ventilated, no direct sun | UV fades the film and ages the core |
Temperature | 5 – 35 °C | Away from heat sources and radiators |
Stacking | Flat, dunnage ≥100 off the floor | Dunnage spacing ≤800 |
Stack height | ≤1.0 m | The bottom layer distorts under load |
Packaging | Keep the original wrapping film | Protects against scratches and dust |
Incompatible goods | Not with heavy or sharp items | Panel faces scratch easily |
Handling: two people lift by the edges, long panels supported at several points, mid-span sag ≤50 mm; never drag or throw. Recommended stock life ≤12 months; beyond that, sample-check flatness and film adhesion.
Load flat, dunnage supports ≤800, strap down;
Avoid prolonged exposure to sun (a vehicle body can exceed 60 °C and bow the panels);
Do not crush with heavy cargo; do not expose to rain;
Cut with a fine-tooth saw or utility knife; wear a mask;
Use a platform stool for overhead work; never stand on a window sill or furniture.

Can WPC panels be used in a bathroom?
In dry zones yes, in a shower no. The core does not absorb water, but water standing in the joints enters the cavity and travels along the furring, causing mold and swelling. Seal joints, trims and the bottom edge with neutral mold-resistant silicone and provide mechanical extract.
Can panels be glued onto old tiles?
Yes, after preparation. Scarify the tile, strip soap and release agent, then bond with construction adhesive on a 400 mm grid, pressing each panel down. Level the wall first if flatness is worse than 3 mm over 2 m, or the joints will open.
Why is an expansion gap mandatory?
WPC moves about 2–3 mm per meter over a 40 K swing. A 3 m wall trapped top and bottom has nowhere to release that movement, so panels bow or the tongue disengages. The 10–15 mm at the floor and 5–10 mm at the head are the allowance.
Hollow or solid panel — which is better?
Hollow panels are lighter and better acoustically, so they suit large areas and high locations. Solid panels resist impact and hold fixings better, which suits corridors and public areas. Profiles and clips differ, so the two cannot be mixed.
Can I hang a TV or cabinet on the panel?
Not on the panel alone. At 8–10 mm the pull-out strength is limited, so any point load must pass through the panel into framing or masonry, with a cover cap over the fixing. Cabinets over 20 kg need a timber insert in the framing first.
How should the surface be cleaned?
Wipe with a damp cloth and neutral detergent. Do not use acetone, thinners, scouring pads or steel wool — they cut the UV coating and leave a dull patch. Soften grease with warm soapy water, then wipe dry.
