Technical guide · Pandaboard
Fiberglass ceiling tiles are typically 600×600 mm and 15–25 mm thick, molded from glass fiber mat with a resin binder at about 2.5–4 kg/m², a third lighter than mineral fiber of the same thickness. They install on T24×38 main runners at ≤1200 mm centers, T24×26 cross tees at 600 mm (equal to the tile width) and an L wall angle; tegular edges clip into a concealed grid. They work to about 85% relative humidity, but the porous face cannot be washed, and cutting releases fibers, so every cut edge must be sealed.
Fiberglass ceiling tiles use glass wool as the body and resin as the binder; the sound absorption coefficient reaches 0.9 or more, making them the first choice for theaters, conference rooms, recording studios and lecture halls where the acoustic environment matters. Installation is close to mineral fiber tiles, but face treatment and cut-edge sealing are more demanding.
Two prerequisites① Fiberglass tiles must not be washed with water — a wetted face keeps permanent water marks and loses absorption; ② Glass fibers irritate skin and airways, so wear gloves, long sleeves and a mask when handling and cutting.

Table 2-1 Protection and tools
Category | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Personal protection | Long sleeves, cut-resistant gloves, dust mask (KN95), goggles | Protection from fiber itch and dust |
Cutting | Sharp utility knife, fine-tooth saw, straightedge | A sharper cut leaves fewer loose fibers |
Edge sealing | Edge-sealing adhesive, aluminum foil tape, matching edge paint | Cuts must be sealed |
Cleaning | Soft brush, vacuum cleaner (HEPA) | Do not wash with water |
Installation | Clean gloves (outer), suction cups | Prevents fingerprints and dents |
As in “05 Painted T-bar Grid”: main runner T24×38 @≤1200, cross tee T24×26 @600, L wall angle, φ6 hanger rods and hanger clips. Tiles are slightly heavier than mineral fiber, but hangers can still be laid out at 1200×1200.
Parts list and reference quantities:Estimated for 600×600 tiles with main runners at 1200 mm and cross tees at 600 mm; includes normal wastage.
Part | Specification | Reference quantity per 100 m² |
|---|---|---|
Main runner | T24×38 | 85–90 m |
Cross tee | T24×26 | 170–180 m |
Wall angle | L25×25 | per room perimeter |
Hanger rod | φ6 mild steel | 70–75 sets |
Hanger clip | matched to main runner | 70–75 pcs |
Splice connector | matched to runners | 25–30 pcs |
Anchor bolt | M8×60 | 70–75 sets |
Gasket tape | tile seating edge (clean rooms) | per tile perimeter |
Move boards indoors at least 24 h before installation and stack them flat on bearers at ≤600 mm centres so moisture content equalises with the room and shrinkage joints do not open later
Use one batch and one shade per room or elevation; mixing batches shows as a visible colour difference
Spot-check 5 % on arrival: flat face, intact edges, no blistering or scratches; reject boards with diagonal deviation over 2 mm
Cut in a separate area, clear dust immediately and seal cut edges as described in this guide
Figure 1 Exposed grid layout When setting out the grid, keep light fittings and air diffusers centered on full tiles to minimize cuts.
Snap lines and set the wall angle - Close the level line loop on all four walls; set the L wall angle with its lower edge flush, at ≤300 spacing.
Hanger rods and main runners - Hangers at 1200×1200, camber 1/200–1/300, joints staggered.
Cross tees - Spacing 600, push the tabs fully home, check against a taut line.
Leveling - Flatness ≤3 mm/2 m, joint lippage ≤1 mm.
Trial lay - Dry-lay one row to check the face direction (film-faced tiles are directional) and any color variation.
Lay tiles - Support the edges with both hands and tilt the tile into place; never press the center of the face — fiberglass tiles dent under pressure.
Cutting - Measure at two points and take the smaller value; score through the face with a utility knife and saw through, then seal the cut immediately.
Cleaning - Vacuum loose dust from the face; wipe fingerprints with a clean dry cloth, never a wet one.
Sealing cut edges is mandatoryExposed fibers at a cut absorb moisture, fray and shed dust and cannot be cleaned. Every cut must be sealed with edge-sealing adhesive or aluminum foil tape, including the edge facing the wall — moisture entering through the wall gap also causes edge failure.
Use tongue-and-groove fiberglass tiles with the dedicated concealed grid;
The underside of the concealed grid must be flush (≤1 mm); fiberglass tiles have low rigidity, so any grid misalignment shows directly on the face;
Install with suction cups, not by hooking fingers into the groove;
Leave a 2 mm joint and do not fill it with compound;
Replace a damaged tile as a whole; provide access panels.
Figure 2 Tile bearing on the grid All four edges rest on the flange, with a 2~3 reveal between the tile edge and the web; fiberglass edges are weak, so the bearing width must not be less than the flange width.
Light fittings: independent hangers for >3 kg; for ≤3 kg use a washer on the back to spread the stress — never bear directly on the fiberglass tile;
Air diffusers: add an aluminum angle frame around the opening, bearing on the main runners;
Access panels: convert a full tile, with independent hangers for the frame;
Acoustic enhancement: leave a 200–400 cavity behind the tiles to improve low frequency markedly; where higher absorption is needed, use thicker tiles or the foil-backed type;
Wall junction: leave a 5–8 mm gap and close it with a matching trim.
Table 6-1 Permissible deviations
Item | Permissible deviation (mm) | Method |
|---|---|---|
Surface flatness | 3 | 2 m straightedge + feeler gauge |
Joint straightness | 3 | 5 m taut line |
Joint lippage | 1 | Steel rule + feeler gauge |
Level | ±5 | Level instrument |
Face | No dents, water marks or stains | Visual, raking light |
Cuts | All edges sealed, no fraying | Visual, tile by tile |
Table 7-1 Typical defects
Symptom | Main cause | Remedy and prevention |
|---|---|---|
Water marks on the face | Wet wiping, drips from above | Replace only; switch to dry cleaning; trace the leak first |
Fraying and dust at cuts | Cut not sealed or only partly sealed | Seal cuts immediately; check tile by tile |
Dents on the face | Pressing the center, tool impact | Handle by the edges; keep tools in a pouch |
Yellowing of the face | Grease, UV light, dust deposits | Keep out of kitchens; vacuum regularly |
Skin irritation | No long sleeves or gloves | Full PPE; wash with warm water after work |
Absorption below target | No cavity behind the tiles; insufficient thickness; large hard reflective surfaces | Provide the designed cavity; use thicker tiles; add absorptive wall treatment |
Figure 3 Stacking Store flat, on dunnage, protected from moisture; fiberglass tiles recover poorly after compression, so the stack height is strictly limited.
Table 8-1 Storage conditions
Item | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Premises | Indoor, dry, ventilated | No open storage |
Relative humidity | ≤70 % | Damp tiles lose absorption and soften |
Stacking | Store flat, dunnage ≥100 clear of floor | No upright or leaning storage |
Stack height | ≤1.0 m (≤8 layers) | Fiberglass does not spring back after compression |
Packaging | Keep original packaging until 2 h before installation | Dust and moisture protection |
Storage conflicts | Not with oils, acids/alkalis or cement | Contamination cannot be cleaned |
Handling: two people lift by the edges; never carry by one corner. Use a flat trolley with soft padding for long moves. Recommended stock age ≤6 months; for older stock, sample-check face flatness and edge strength.
Load flat, stack height ≤1.0 m, strapped down and covered with a waterproof tarpaulin;
Do not compress under heavy goods; no rain exposure;
Cut in a dedicated area with dust extraction;
Wear a dust mask, goggles and long-sleeved gloves throughout;
Wash exposed skin after work and wash work clothes separately from everyday clothing.

Fiberglass or mineral fiber tile for a humid room?
Fiberglass. It is molded from resin-bonded glass fiber mat, absorbs little water and stays stable to about 85% RH, while mineral fiber is limited to 70% and sags permanently. Neither suits areas with free water.
Can fiberglass tiles be washed?
No. The porous face drives dirt into the pores and leaves marks, and scrubbing raises the surface. Vacuum with a soft brush head or wipe dry; for greasy areas use clip-in aluminum panels.
What about fibers when cutting?
Cut outdoors or downwind, lay a sheet to catch debris, and wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask. Seal the cut edge at once; an unsealed edge keeps shedding fibers.
Can 600×600 tiles go on cross tees at 1200 mm?
No. Cross tee spacing equals the 600 mm tile width so every edge is supported. Wider spacing leaves the edge free, and the tile sags and steps at the joint.
Can I stand on the ceiling to service equipment?
Never stand on a tile. Lift it out and work from a platform, keeping tools on an independent walkway; the tile carries only its own weight.
Why do the tiles show yellow water marks?
Usually condensate or a leaking pipe above the ceiling. Find and fix the source, then replace the tiles; new tiles under the same leak stain again.
