Aluminum ceilings come in three forms: clip-in panels, linear strip and baffles. Clip-in panels are typically 300×300 to 600×600 mm and 0.5–1.2 mm thick, their folded edges clipping into carrier rails; strip and baffle systems hang from dedicated clips on runners or tube rails. All three use hangers at 1200×1200 mm and camber 1/200–1/300, and panels must never be walked on. Strip the film within 24 hours and cut openings with a hole saw.
Aluminum ceiling is the general term for metal ceilings; four types are common: clip-in panel (square), linear strip panel, baffle and open-cell grid. All four resist moisture and fire and allow single panels to be removed. What differs is that the carrier system and the clipping method are entirely different, and accessories are not interchangeable. Each type is covered separately below.
· Aluminum panels are thin and low in stiffness, so flatness comes from the grid, not from the panel;
· Panels ship with a protective film, and the moment it is removed directly affects the finished quality (see Chapter 06);
· Accessories for the four types must not be mixed; order them as a matched set for the panel type.

Figure 1 Carrier rail clip connection The square panel is folded on all four edges and clips directly onto the carrier rail flange; the rail width sets an even joint between panels.
Set out - Snap the finished ceiling level line and the main runner lines on all four walls, closing the loop, deviation ≤3 mm.
Fix the L angle trim - Fix L trim around the walls with its lower edge flush with the level line, at ≤300 spacing; drill the tile face with a glass bit to avoid chipping the glaze.
Install hanger rods and main runners - φ6 hanger rod with hanger clip at ≤1200×1200; level the main runners (aluminum demands more here: hold to ≤1 mm/2 m).
Install the carrier rails - Square to the main runners at a spacing equal to the panel width (300 or 600); connect with hangers and level the underside to a taut line.
Trial-fit one panel - Fit one panel and check the joint, the flatness and the direction before covering the area.
Lay the panels - Tilt the panel, hook one folded edge onto the carrier rail, then lift so that the opposite edge clips in; press gently until it clicks into place.
Edge trim - Cut the border panels to the measured size with the cut edge to the wall; cover cut edges with a matching trim or edge strip.
Remove the film and clean - Remove the protective film as soon as installation is complete and wipe with a soft cloth; never scrape with a blade.
Film removal deadlineUnder UV and heat the film ages and leaves adhesive residue. Left longer than 30 days (15 days for exterior grades), it leaves marks that are hard to remove and cannot be cleaned off with solvent (which attacks the coating). Correct practice: remove it once installation is complete and before acceptance, pulling slowly at 180° to the panel face.
Set out and fix the edge trimStrip ceilings run along the length of the space: snap the strip direction lines and the level line, then fix edge trim at both ends.
Install main runnersSquare to the strips, spacing ≤1200.
Install the strip carriersParallel to the strips at a spacing equal to the strip width; the underside must be leveled.
Install the stripsStart at one end and clip the C edge into the carrier teeth, strip by strip; where a strip is too short, lap it at a carrier and add a splice piece.
Close the endsFit end caps or trim at the ends and seal the cut edges.
Set outSnap the center line of every baffle at the designed spacing (usually 50–100 mm clear).
Install the transfer layerMain runners or angle-steel transfer beams at ≤1200, securely connected to the structure.
Fit the baffle hangersClip the hangers onto the main runners at ≤1200; insert the baffle, level it and lock it.
AlignRun a taut line along the baffles and align each one, keeping the ends at the same level.
Finish the endsFit end caps, deburr the cuts and touch up the paint.
What the eye notices on bafflesThe look of a baffle ceiling depends on even spacing and flush ends, not on each baffle being straight on its own. Fix the two datum baffles at the ends first, then run a taut line between them and set each baffle to it — faster and more accurate than leveling them one at a time.
Openings: use a metal hole saw, deburr the edge and touch up the paint; at least 30 from the panel edge;
Luminaires and heat lamps: anything over 3 kg needs independent hanger rods and must never hang from the carrier rail;
Access panels: made from a panel of the same size, with hinges or clips and a frame on independent hangers;
Tiled walls: the L trim bears on the tile face, sealed with neutral fungus-resistant sealant;
External corners and pipe boxing: use the matching corner piece; never butt two panels directly;
Long spaces: provide an expansion joint every 6–8 m to prevent thermal buckling.
Table 6-1 Permissible deviations
Item | Permissible deviation (mm) | Method of check |
|---|---|---|
Surface flatness | 2 | 2 m straightedge + feeler gauge (stricter for thin panels) |
Joint straightness | 2 | 5 m taut line |
Joint height difference | 0.5 | Steel rule + feeler gauge |
Level | ±5 | Level instrument |
Joint width | Even, deviation ≤1 | Sampled with a steel rule |
Shade difference, scratches, adhesive residue | Not permitted | Visual check in daylight |
Table 7-1 Typical defects
Symptom | Main cause | Remedy and prevention |
|---|---|---|
Ripples along the panel edges | Carrier rail not leveled; panel too thin | Level each carrier rail to ≤1 mm; use panels of 0.6 or more |
Uneven joint width | Carrier spacing off; panel dimensional tolerance | Space the carriers to the measured panel size; use one batch |
Film will not peel, adhesive left behind | Left on too long; baked in the sun | Remove before acceptance; test a small area with a dedicated adhesive remover |
Corners lift and will not clip | Folded edge deformed; forced during installation | Replace the panel; hook first, then press |
Darkening or rust spots at openings | Cut edge not touched up; scratched by steel tools | Touch up with matching paint; use stainless tools |
Dents in the face | Standing on panels; dropped tools | Work from trestles; keep tools in a pouch |
Visible shade difference | Batches mixed | One batch per space; replace from the spares |
Table 8-1 Warehouse conditions
Item | Requirement | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
Location | Indoors, dry, ventilated | Never stored with acids, alkalis or salts |
Temperature | 5 – 35 ℃ | Heat accelerates film aging |
Stacking | Flat, with soft paper or bubble film between layers | Against scratches and bending |
Stack height | ≤1.0 m | An over-high stack deforms the bottom panels |
Packaging | Keep the original pack and the protective film | Patch damaged film with tape to keep moisture out |
Two people lift by the edges; never lift one corner alone (a thin panel takes a permanent bend);
Strips and baffles are long, so support them at several points and keep the mid-span sag under 50 mm;
Never rest tools on the panels or stand on them;
Cut in a separate area and clear aluminum swarf promptly so that it cannot scratch other panels.
Recommended stock ≤12 months; the protective film is usually good for 6 months, beyond which its peel should be sampled. Panels with bubbles under the film or lifted edges must not be used on the main visible surface.
Load flat with paper between layers, secure with strapping and cover with a rain-proof tarpaulin;
Long panels go on dedicated racks with mid-span support to prevent bending in transit;
Never ship with heavy goods or sharp objects;
Wear goggles and a mask when cutting aluminum and use an aluminum-specific blade (to prevent clogging);
Hot work above the ceiling requires a permit, and aluminum swarf must not accumulate near luminaires.

Are clip-in aluminum panels right for a kitchen or bathroom?
Yes, they are the usual choice. Aluminum takes no water, wipes clean and lifts out for pipe access. Specify a water-resistant finish, seal the trim with neutral mold-resistant sealant, and use galvanized grid parts.
What is the real difference between 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm panels?
Stiffness and grip. A thin panel deflects at mid span and its edge releases more easily. On a 300 module 0.5–0.6 mm works; on 600 modules use 0.8 mm or more, confirmed on the order.
Clip-in, linear strip or baffle — which should I use?
Clip-in panels close the ceiling and demount easily, so they suit kitchens and bathrooms. Strip ceilings read as continuous lines. Baffles stay open so services show through. Hanger rules are the same.
When should the protective film come off?
Within 24 hours of installation. Under heat or sun the adhesive cures and lifts the coating when pulled. Soften residue with neutral cleaner and wipe it off; never scrape with a blade.
Can I stand on the ceiling to reach services?
No. A panel carries only its own weight, and standing on it dents the face and releases the folded edge. Hang a crawl board from the structure instead.
What if a light opening is cut too large?
Judge the gap: under 3 mm a trim ring covers it. Beyond that, replace the panel or fit an adapter frame. Never bridge the gap with tape or filler, which cracks as the panel moves.
